Dynamo shares heartbreaking inspiration behind buried alive stunt

Dynamo opened up on his struggles with mental health after the death of his nan.

The magician joined Lorraine Kelly on Thursday from a secret location ahead of his new special Dynamo is Dead, which airs later today. Lorraine questioned the magician on his reasons for staging his most dangerous stunt yet.

She asked: "You are going to be buried alive, Dynamo? What do you expect to happen here and how did this all come about?"

Dynamo, real name Steven Frayne, explained he had struggled after the death of his grandmother Nellie Walsh as he opened up on the motivation behind the death-defying stunt.

He said: "The last few years I've felt like I've been in a nightmare and amidst all the stuff I was having to deal with I lost my nana who got me into magic with my grandpa when I was younger. She took me to magic competitions – she was the magic behind the magic and when she died I just felt the magic in me died as well.

"I realised I didn't want to do magic anymore, but when I started to feel like I need to keep her legacy alive and bring magic back, I figured I needed to bury the part of me that died with her so I could start again."

The magician explained this is how he came up with the concept of burying himself alive. He continued: "I'll be honest, back then when I decided I wanted to do it I didn't really care if I got out of the hole.

"I didn't feel I had anything left to live for, but I've come a long way now. It's been a few years and I feel like I've got a lot of live for and a lot to get out for.

"I need to do this for me as a personal thing but I need to get out because I've found a lot more magic that I want to share with the world and I want to spend some time with you in the actual studio with [Lorraine]."

The press release for the feature length show claims Dynamo "is set to be killed by his creator" and will see him "defy the odds and go beyond magic – burying himself alive."

Dynamo was diagnosed with Crohn's, an inflammatory bowel disease, while a teenager and was encouraged to distract himself with magic by his late grandparents. He became a household name in 2011 but disappeared from the public gaze after his chronic illness flared up in 2017 when he ate a piece of raw chicken at a fast-food chain.

He vowed to return to magic but he battled with mental health struggles and struggled with grief after he lost his grandmother Nellie, leading him to lock himself away. Dynamo is Dead sees the magician return to public view and includes famous faces such as Cara Delevingne and Tyson Fury.
