Jonny Evans has urged the Manchester United hierarchy to stick with Erik ten Hag and back him in the January transfer market.

The pressure on the Dutchman has increased after United were dumped out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich in midweek. That result came just days after they were humbled 3-0 by Bournemouth at Old Trafford, while a daunting trip to arch-rivals Liverpool looms large on the horizon.

Ten Hag enjoyed a fine maiden campaign in Manchester but has overseen the club's worst start to a season in decades this year and is now at risk. Evans, though, has called on the club hierarchy to stand by their man by backing him in the winter window.

Speaking to Norwegian outlet FotbollSkanalen post-match, Evans said of Ten Hag: “He is a fantastic coach and I have no doubts about him. In January we get a new window and a chance to improve the team. Not playing in Europe will give him more time.

“We’ve had a tough period but hopefully, we’ll get players back from injuries and get more consistency in the team. It would be good for him [Ten Hag].”

The veteran defender's comments come at a time where Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the new prospective co-owner of Manchester United, has reportedly met with former Chelsea manager Graham Potter.

The Ineos chief will assume control of all sporting operations once his £1.25billion deal for a 25 per cent stake in the club is ratified, meaning he will have the final say on Ten Hag. But despite previous reports indicating Ten Hag's job is safe, Ratcliffe's talks with Potter would appear to indicate a change is now not beyond the realms of possibility.

A new report from The Sun shed light on the meeting and also outlines that another heavy loss against Liverpool - who thrashed United 7-0 back in March - could be the final straw for the former Ajax chief.

United, who have missed out on the consolation of a Europa League spot after finishing bottom of Group A, are already well off the pace of their top Premier League rivals. To make matters worse for Ten Hag, he's also in the midst of a crippling injury crisis with 13 players absent for Sunday's big match.
