Scholes slams "stupid" Fernandes as Man Utd boss Ten Hag makes Onana call

Manchester United are set to turn their attention back to the Premier League, following a disappointing 3-3 draw with Galatasaray in the Champions League.

The result leaves Erik ten Hag's side bottom of their group and needing to beat Bayern Munich in their final group game while hoping Galatasaray draw with Copenhagen to reach the last 16. Ten Hag will now be hoping his side can get back to winning ways when they take on top-four rivals Newcastle on Saturday.

United currently sit sixth, just one point above Newcastle, and have won their last three league games. With that in mind, here is all the latest news from the red side of Manchester.

Ten Hag to stick with Onana

Goalkeeper Andre Onana is set to start against Newcastle, despite making two mistakes against Galatasaray that led directly to goals.

Onana has made several blunders since his big-money move from Inter Milan over the summer and Ten Hag has warned the 27-year-old he cannot afford to make any more mistakes, with back-up goalkeeper Altay Bayindir waiting in the wings.

"Altay is getting used to the Premier League, and getting used to European football – which is tough when you're coming from Turkey. But we're very pleased with that process, he's doing very well. He has to be patient, but if he works well if he keeps his progress, he will get his chances and then he has to take this."

Scholes slams Fernandes

Paul Scholes has taken issue with comments made by United captain Bruno Fernandes, who admitted they "conceded really bad goals" against Galatasaray, with Scholes pointing out that he was one of those at fault after giving away "stupid fouls".

"I know in his interview he is talking about mistakes, but he made two big mistakes tonight by giving two stupid fouls away that led to two goals," Scholes told TNT Sports. "The full team, including himself as the captain, have to take responsibility - it's a game they should win.

"They just cannot keep clean sheets - the defence is all over the place, the keeper is making mistakes, Bruno giving away cheap free-kicks. It makes the game difficult for them every time and they don’t need to do that."

Schmeichel lays into Martial

Fellow United legend Peter Schmeichel, meanwhile, took aim at Anthony Martial, claiming he "did not do anything" after replacing Rasmus Hojlund in the second half.

"When you are 2-0 up, and it is not the first time we have been 2-0 up in this tournament, you have to kill the game, you make sure the other team can't get into it, you keep the ball and try not to make mistakes," Schmeichel told CBS Sports. "Of course, though, you have got to have a look at when Hojlund came off, a lot of the pressure from the very front disappeared.

"The guy you put in (Martial) did not do anything. You had someone (Hojlund) who worked really hard for the team up front but suddenly you don't have that pressure which gives the other team a lot of opportunities to pass the ball around. These are all things you have got to look at but, when you score this amount of goals, you expect to have more than one point."
