Taylor Swift and Joe Alwyn's relationship was on the rocks two years ago, fans have claimed after a tell-tale clue that has seemingly revealed the couple's relationship breakdown in 2021.

Back in April, the world was shaken when it was revealed that the American singer, 33, had broken up with longtime boyfriend Joe Alwyn. Fans of the hitmaker were distraught to learn of the split from the British actor, following a series of lovey-dovey albums penned with him in mind, as well as engagement claims.

But around a month after the split emerged, Taylor announced that she would be releasing two new editions of her 2022 album Midnights. One of the editions, which was only available at her Eras Tour for a couple of nights, contained an all new "From The Vault" track titled You're Losing Me.

The song soon made its way online after fans got hold of the CD, ripped them onto their laptops and uploaded them. The world then heard the gut-wrenching bridge of You're Losing Me for the first time.

In the bridge, Taylor sings: "How long could we be a sad song / 'Til we were too far gone to bring back to life?

"I gave you all my best me's, my endless empathy / And all I did was bleed as I tried to be the bravest soldier / Fighting in only your army, frontlines, don't you ignore me / I'm the best thing at this party (You're losing me)."

She then admits: "And I wouldn't marry me either / A pathological people pleaser / Who only wanted you to see her."

And now, six months after it was released in physical form, yesterday You're Losing Me dropped onto Spotify to celebrate Taylor Swift being named as the streaming platform's global artist of the year.

Fans originally thought that Taylor had penned the hit song around April/May this year, to coincide with her split from Joe, but after the song hit Spotify yesterday, Taylor's collaborator Jack Antonoff shared some details that prove otherwise.

Taking to Instagram to commemorate the occasion, Jack shared a snap of Taylor eating some raisins and revealed that the song was written and recorded soon after the photo was taken, with it recorded "at home" on December 5, 2021.

Fans were shocked when they realised that the timeline of You're Losing Me was different from how they originally perceived it. "So she felt this way for years," said one person on X, formerly known as Twitter.

"I DON'T THINK YOU UNDERSTAND THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING," added another. A third then said: "So that means that Midnights is about Joe." A fourth then chimed in: "No you don’t understand this just brings a whole new perspective to this line it’s so sad to think she’s been going back and forth that feeling too many times."
