A Government which takes the electorate for fools is one that deserves to be booted from office.

Jeremy Hunt yesterday tried to hoodwink voters with a dishonest and misjudged Autumn Statement.

He presented the Conservatives as the party of low taxation when their policies will take the tax burden to a record high.

The 2p cut in National Insurance was a smokescreen designed to hide the fact workers are set to pay more in income tax.

The Chancellor described the financial package as a budget for growth when the figures show the economy will stagnate over the next two years.

While there were some elements of the statement which will be welcomed, including the increase in the minimum wage and the protection of the pension triple lock, the overall package failed to address UK priorities.

There is an urgent need to fix the crisis in social care, cut the NHS waiting list and rebuild our crumbling schools. These were not even an afterthought. This was a bankrupt statement by a bankrupt Chancellor.

End the killing

Barring a last-minute hitch there will be a four-day pause in hostilities between Israel and Hamas from today.

This break in the conflict will allow the return of up to 50 Israeli hostages in exchange for 150 Palestinian women and children held in Israeli jails.

It also provides an opportunity to deliver vital aid, medical supplies and food to the people of Gaza.

The ceasefire should be used to invest even more effort into finding a resolution to a crisis that has already cost too many innocent lives.

Walk on, Julia

She can take heart from knowing her fans will be with her, every step of the way.
