I've wanted to experience driving an Alfra Romeo ever since Jeremy Clarkson told Top Gear viewers 'you can't be a true petrolhead until you've owned one'.

Conscious, in a race against the electric inevitable, this ambition was in danger of never happening, I bit the right hand drive off the person who offered me the opportunity to drive the one for a weekend away in the Cotswolds.

I often think the picturesque Cotswolds, with its rolling hills, charming villages, and winding country roads, perfectlyt sets the stage for a quintessentially British getaway. What better way to explore this idyllic landscape than in the stylish and sporty Alfa Romeo Tonale Veloce Plug-In Hybrid? It proved an exthralling experience of both elegance and performance.

This compact SUV, infused with Italian flair, promises a blend of elegance and performance that proved to be a perfect match for a weekend escape to the Cotswolds.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale makes a stunning first impression. With its bold and distinctive design, it's impossible to overlook this SUV. The iconic Alfa Romeo triangular grille, sleek LED headlights, and sculpted sides create a harmonious and captivating aesthetic. It was clear from the moment I set eyes on the Tonale that this was a vehicle designed to stand out.

Behind the wheel, the Tonale lived up to the Alfa Romeo reputation for performance. The 2.0-liter turbocharged engine roared to life with 276 horsepower, and the responsive acceleration was nothing short of exhilarating. The eight-speed automatic transmission effortlessly shifted through gears, delivering a seamless driving experience.

The winding roads of the Cotswolds offered the perfect stage for the Tonale to showcase its dynamic handling. The SUV's precise steering and agile chassis made tackling tight corners a pleasure. The Q4 all-wheel-drive system provided optimal traction, ensuring stability on both dry and wet surfaces.

The cabin of the Alfa Romeo Tonale is a testament to Italian craftsmanship and attention to detail. The leather seats, featuring the Alfa Romeo emblem, are not only visually appealing but also comfortable for long drives. The interior is tastefully accented with elegant materials, and the dashboard layout is intuitive and driver-focused. The Tonale's infotainment system is user-friendly, and it offers features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for seamless connectivity.

The Cotswolds, often dubbed 'the Heart of England', presents a kaleidoscope of breathtaking views. As I traversed the picturesque villages, each with its unique charm, the Tonale's panoramic sunroof offered a perfect vantage point; an opportunity to take in the stunning countryside, bringing the outdoors inside and enhancing the overall driving experience.

Despite its sporty nature, the Alfa Romeo Tonale proved itself as a practical and versatile companion for a weekend getaway. With ample rear cargo space, I could easily pack for a weekend adventure, from luggage to hiking gear. There's a surprising amount of leg room in the rear - albeit at the expense of boot space - but the rear seats also fold down to accommodate larger items or a furry four-legged friend.

The hybrid version was particularly appreciated when I wanted to 'tiptoe' quietly through quaint Cotswold villages on electric, saving my engine power for the open roads; it will do 33 miles on electric power alone.

To be honest, exploring the Cotswolds in the Alfa Romeo Tonale was a remarkable experience that combined Italian elegance with a thrilling driving performance. It's a vehicle that not only draws attention but also lives up to the expectation of driving enthusiasts. The Cotswolds, with its enchanting scenery, winding roads, and quaint villages, proved to be the perfect setting for the Tonale to demonstrate its capabilities.

Starting at £47,714.50, I would say it was on the pricey side and I would have wanted more boot room for that, but the Alfa Romeo Tonale is a compelling choice for those seeking an SUV that marries style, performance, and comfort. Whether it's a weekend getaway to the countryside or daily urban commutes, this vehicle offers a taste of Italy's automotive excellence, delivering an elegant and spirited driving experience.

In the heart of the Cotswolds or on the bustling city streets, the Alfa Romeo Tonale stands out as an excellent choice for those who appreciate the finer things in life and demand an exceptional driving experience.
