Garnacho labelled "a clown" by Copenhagen star after trying sneaky tactic again

Alejandro Garnacho has been described as a “clown” with “the mentality of a child” by one of the Copenhagen players who inflicted yet more misery on Manchester United.

The young winger was accused of attempting to scuff the penalty spot before Diogo Goncalves converted in the first half of last night’s Champions League encounter. He had done similar in the reverse fixture when Jordan Larsson’s attempt was saved by Andre Onana deep in added time to earn United a 1-0 win.

And centre half Denis Vavro was not holding back when asked about Garnacho’s behaviour during the 4-3 loss in Denmark.

Speaking to , Vavro said: “I saw that he tried to do something about the penalty kick, but Kevin Diks stood in front and blocked.

“It is the second time. And then on our track? To me he is a clown. He has the mentality of a child when he tries something like this again. In an away game. One thing is at home in the 97th minute, but here in the first half. I don’t understand him trying to do that.”

Garnacho had also incensed Copenhagen fans by making a shushing gesture when Bruno Fernandes had put Erik ten Hag’s team 3-2 in front on a remarkable evening at Parken.

But the Argentine was left crestfallen at the end as United are now left with the daunting task of having to win away to Galatasaray if they are to reach the knockout stages. Bayern Munich have already qualified for the round of 16, leaving the other three sides to fight for the remaining spot.

And Copenhagen head coach Jacob Neestrup rubbed salt into United’s wounds by claiming it was his team's worst performance in the competition but they still deserve to be in second place.

“For me it was by far the weakest performance we have had in this group stage so far,” Neestrup said. “To take the picture today then maybe we didn’t deserve three points or maybe even one point.

“But if you take it over four rounds then it was very, very well deserved that Copenhagen is in second place. I believe truly we have been the second best team over four games, not today but over four games.”

United face Luton Town at Old Trafford on Saturday and Ten Hag said after last night’s latest setback: “This squad is resilient. The whole season so many decisions are against us, so many setbacks or injuries.

“And every time there is a spirit and there is a fight and we will keep going because I'm sure, as I said, it will turn. Built on one moment in the season, it will turn in our favour.”
