Conor McGregor told missing detail for Michael Chandler fight is "weird"

Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler have been told the confusion over what weight their fight will take place at is "weird".

UFC legend McGregor is gearing up for his comeback fight against Chandler next year after coaching against his rival on season 31 of The Ultimate Fighter. The former two-weight world champion has been sat on the sidelines since breaking his leg against Dustin Poirier in their July 2021 trilogy, but is now eager to make his return.

McGregor re-entered the USADA drug testing pool last month to get the ball rolling for his comeback and has since returned three negative samples. All signs point towards a fight at UFC 300 with Chandler, but the pair have gone back and forth about what weight class they will fight at.

“Never in history have we had a fight where we don’t have a weight class,” UFC great Chael Sonnen told MMA Junkie. “It still hasn’t been stated if Conor is going to 170 or 155 or doing a catchweight. They went on Twitter and said they were going 185. I’m just sharing with you this is getting a little weird at this point.”

“To see Michael Chandler training everyday and to see Conor McGregor anywhere in the world except for a gym, it’s one of those things like there is a money grab at some point. You will ask every fighter, ‘Why are you still fighting?’ and the answer if he tells the truth is because they’re still paying them. It feels as though Conor is getting into the cash grab.

“I can’t blame him for doing these things, but there was a time in his career when he was hungry, youthful, active, and busy and could go do both of those things. That time was many years ago, and it just seems as though at some point we’re getting trolled. He’s back in the pool; that’s a good sign. He’s fighting Chandler, they say, at a weight class they haven’t picked."

By the time McGregor returns to the cage, over four years would have passed since his last UFC win. The Irishman knocked out Donald Cerrone in January 2020 but was beaten by Poirier twice in his next two fights. Chandler hasn't fought since being tapped out by Poirier last November.
