Police are hunting two "dangerously out of control" dogs that attacked several horses in a field in Lancashire this morning.

The public has been warned not to approach the dogs, described as one large black dog and possibly a cockapoo breed. Cops are still trying to find the dogs around Beaumont College in Lancaster - and have asked anyone who sees the animals or recognises their description to call 999 straight away.

No information has been given about how badly the horses were hurt and no arrests have been made yet. Lancaster Area Police said on Facebook: "You may have seen a lot of police officers in the area around Beaumont College this morning, and we want to give you an update as to why.

"We were called just after 7.10am this morning to a report that two dogs were dangerously out of control and had attacked a number of horses, in the fields surrounding the college. The two dogs are described as one large, black dog and a second possible cockapoo-type breed.

"We are still yet to locate the dogs, so want to make the public aware not to approach them and to avoid the area, particularly if you usually walk your own dog in this area. If you have any information, if you see these dogs around Lancaster or if you recognise the description of the dogs please call us immediately on 999 quoting log 0303 of October 28."

Earlier this month, we reported that a pensioner has had to have an arm, leg and a finger amputated after a savage dog attack involving two suspected Rottweilers. Dad Vic Franklin was mauled by the hounds on a street in Bognor Regis, Sussex, and left with "life-changing injuries" in the attack. Both dogs were shot dead by police at the scene.

The 77-year-old is still in hospital two months after the attack, having undergone multiple surgeries. Vic's injuries were so appalling that both his left arm and right leg had to be amputated, as well as the middle finger on his surviving right hand. The family claim they "feared the worst" after seeing him in hospital shortly after the mauling.

Son Lee said the attack has sent "shockwaves" through the family, adding: "We were completely devastated when we heard what happened." Vic has been described as the "glue" holding his family together, and his loved ones now worry for his quality of life after such traumatic injuries.

"We realised we didn’t have a choice and after having his left leg, right arm and left middle finger amputated," Lee said. "We feared the worst. You just don’t know what’s going to happen. But with dad in recovery now, everyone who sees him says how much of an inspiration he is. He’s still dad, and he still manages to make everyone laugh."
