Coleen Rooney is likely to be relieved that her husband, Wayne, has left D.C. United to take the Birmingham City job after text messages previously revealed her mixed relationship with Washington D.C.

The former Manchester United hero experienced spells as a player and as a coach in the US capital over the past decade, before taking his new post at St Andrew's. However, it would appear that the famous couple were divided when it came to their enjoyment of their stint stateside.

During her spouse's first stint with DCU between 2018 and 2020, Liverpudlian Coleen struggled to settle across the pond as she missed her home. The TV personality and fashion designer confided her true feelings towards Washington DC to future foe Rebekah Vardy in 2018.

A series of texts were revealed during the Wagatha Christie feud, some of which explicitly addressed Coleen's hardship when it came to adjusting to life in the US. Responding to the wife of Leicester City legend, Jamie Vardy, she said: "Hiya, hope your all week [well]. We’re ok thanks its tough being on your own though."

She added: "Washington isn’t the best....nice to visit but different to live. Not loads for the kids to do, mostly park, hardly any soft plays and things like that. It’s quite behind the UK, which I never would have though. But we will get used to it (I hope).

She also hinted at the aforementioned differences in opinion that she shared with husband Wayne in relation to the city itself. She continued, saying: "Wayne is loving it, and the kids are fine, settled into school straight away. So really happy they are fine. Thanks for the message love xx."

Providing further insight into her thoughts in relation to the family's move stateside, Coleen also added that she had 'never believed in homesickness' before but their move to the US had prompted significant personal anguish, to the point that she would cry 'every night'.

Of course, the Rooneys would eventually return to the UK as Wayne finished off his playing days at Derby County between 2020 and 2021. From there, he would take the manager's job at Pride Park before heading back to D.C. United to continue budding his coaching career last year.

As he returned to the MLS outfit for a second spell, it is understood that Coleen and the couple's three children stayed behind in the UK while Wayne took up his new job. However, he would only last just over a year in the post before returning to England to assume the reigns at Birmingham.

Speaking of his delight at joining the ambitious EFL Championship club upon his appointment, he said: "I am absolutely delighted to be joining Birmingham City at such an exciting time. It is very clear that they have a plan and are committed to realising their ambition for the club. We are fully aligned on what is expected."
