Commuters this morning are warned to prepare for problems on the roads as large parts of the UK will be shrouded in a thick blanket of fog for hours.

Flights are also at risk of being cancelled or delayed at airports across Yorkshire and the East Midlands, in particular, as fog will struggle to lift this morning. The two regions, along with the East of England and Humberside, are subject to a yellow weather warning for fog, which the Met Office issued on Thursday night.

Alex Burkill, meteorologist with the Met Office, described the unsettled theme to the weather in the service's latest YouTube video. He said: "Where we see any breaks in the cloud, clear spells will allow for some mist and fog patches to develop and these could cause some problems on the roads first thing Friday morning."

The meteorologist added: "As we go through Friday then, it is going to be a bit misty, murky and even foggy for some of us to start off with and we will continue to have some heavy, perhaps even persistent rain across Eastern parts of Scotland."

The fog is expected to clear by 11am, with the yellow weather warning in place until 10.30am. The impact of this, the Met Office says, will be slower journey times by car, with possible delays to bus services and a chance of delays or cancellations to flights leaving or arriving at airports across the affected region. Tourists are advised to check the websites of their airports, particularly East Midlands Airport, Doncaster Sheffield Airport, Humberside Airport, Norwich Airport and, to a lesser extent, Newcastle Airport.

Visibility could become a big issue during rush hour across the affected areas. Writing on its website, the Met Office says: "Some dense patches are possible, with visibilities below 100 metres in places, particularly across the higher ground of east and northeast England."

When the fog lifts, the impacted regions will experience drizzle for the rest of Friday. Other areas will also endure another wet day, forecasters say, with a further yellow weather warning for rain across Central, Tayside & Fife and Grampian in Scotland, areas already battered by downpours this week. The coast at and near Aberdeen is likely to experience the heaviest rainfall, it is understood.

As of Friday morning some 21 flood warnings are in place across England, including many across the East Midlands. River Severn remains a concern through Worcestershire and Gloucestershire, following severe flooding already in and around Tewkesbury.

Meanwhile eight flood warnings are in place across Scotland, including across the area subject to the yellow weather warning for rain. Kinnaird/Bridge of Dun, Inchbare, Finavon and Tannadice, and Brechin, which are all in and around Angus, are feared to flood in the coming days.
