Gary Neville identifies Man Utd's biggest problem since Sir Alex Ferguson left

Gary Neville believes all of Manchester United's recent managers have been "very good" - insisting the Glazer family are to blame for their lack of trophies.

United were one of the most successful teams in England during Sir Alex Ferguson's time in charge. They won 13 Premier League titles and picked up two Champions League trophies - among other honours - during the Glaswegian's 26-and-a-half-year reign.

Yet they've failed to win either of those competitions since Ferguson's retirement in 2013. United have won two League Cups, two Community Shields, the FA Cup and the Europa League, with several managers trying and failing to replicate Ferguson's success.

David Moyes, Ryan Giggs, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Michael Carrick and Ralf Rangnick have all spent time in charge of United since Ferguson's exit, while the jury is still out on Erik ten Hag despite him leading the club to win the League Cup last season and the FA Cup final.

Neville was asked during a Q&A on Twitter who United's best post-Ferguson manager is. The club's former captain replied: "All very good managers but hampered by the ownership, (there's a) lack of good leadership below the owners and poor recruitment."

United have been accused of adopting a scattergun approach to transfers since Ferguson's exit, as the Glazers didn't appoint a football director until March 2021. John Murtough was given that job, with Darren Fletcher taking on the role of technical director.

United's poor transfers include Paul Pogba, who was re-signed from Juventus for a world-record transfer fee in 2016. The £89million midfielder won just two major honours during his six-year spell before returning to Juventus on a free transfer in 2022.

United faced criticism for making Harry Maguire the world's most expensive defender in 2019, paying Leicester £80m for the England international's services. Maguire has done well at times and remains at the club, but most fans believe United paid over the odds.

Angel Di Maria was sold to Paris Saint-Germain for a cut-price fee in 2015, just a year after he arrived from Real Madrid in a £59.7m deal. Fred had an indifferent spell during his time at Old Trafford and his £47m transfer from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2018 still raises eyebrows.

United have handed out huge contracts to both Alexis Sanchez and Cristiano Ronaldo in recent years, but neither transfer worked out as hoped. Even Ten Hag appears to be making blunders, with Antony not looking like the £82m player fans were promised.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe hopes to be the man who changes United's fortunes. The INEOS chief is on the verge of buying a 25 percent stake in the club for £1.4billion, with the Glazers remaining in overall charge. It's believed Ratcliffe will take control of football operations.
