A fresh weather warning for rain has been issued covering a vast swathe of England already hit by flooding as a result of Storm Babet.

A yellow warning has been issued for "heavy rain" across parts of the North, including in many areas which have already been hit by drastic floods. The Met Office issued the alert on Monday for the East Midlands, including Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, as well as much of Yorkshire including Sheffield, Leeds and York and Humberside.

The warning, which is in place for between 3am and 4pm on Tuesday, stated: “There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded, causing damage to some buildings. There is a small chance of fast-flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life. There is a small chance that some communities will become cut off by flooded roads.”

Around 170 homes and firms in Lincolnshire have already been hit by floods in recent days, Mark Baxter from the local fire service said, while further properties in Retford, Nottinghamshire, and Rotherham, South Yorkshire, have also been sieged leading to evacuations and road closures.

Babet has already claimed the lives of nine people, including pensioner Maureen Gilbert who died at her home in Derbyshire on Friday. The 83-year-old from Chesterfield was found by her son and grandson, who visited her flat out of concern for her safety.

One woman had to be rescued from a stranded car in Sheffield on Friday morning as a nearby GP surgery also had to have water pumped out from the floods. As of midday Monday, the Environment Agency have 108 flood warnings out for the whole of the UK.

It comes as millions of home and business owners across the UK are dealing with the devastation wreaked by floods from Storm Babet last week. The storm brought six weeks' worth of rain which prompted a rare red "danger to life" warning for Aberdeen and Angus in Scotland.

The storm also tragically resulted in the deaths of two people in Scotland. Wendy Taylor, 57, died after being swept into a river near Angus on Thursday following heavy rain, with her body recovered from the Water of Lee at Glen Esk. Another man, a 56-year-old driver, died after he was hit by a falling tree in the storm near Forfar, Angus, on Thursday.

Residents in Brechin, Angus, meanwhile may not be able to return to their homes "before Christmas", one councillor has warned. The are, one of the worst hit in the country, was visited by First Minister Humza Yousaf earlier on Monday, who met with residents forced from their homes.
