Further heavy rain this week will prolong flooding misery for communities across the UK.

The Environment Agency is responding to floods across several counties affected by Storm Babet, especially Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, where some river levels have been the highest since 2007. With 118 flood warnings and 131 alerts in place today across England, Scotland and Wales, the Environment Agency says flooding will continue to be a threat for most places, including parts of the Midlands and east Wales, until Wednesday at the earliest. This could change, depending on the extent of the rainfall forecast in the next two days, and the pace of drainage along the banks of major rivers.

A spokesperson for Environment Agency said: "More flood warnings are expected to be issued across these regions into next week. River flooding will continue into Wednesday along the River Severn. Further flooding is possible from rivers and surface water on Tuesday and Wednesday for parts of England due to further heavy rain."

Rain could become particularly heavy on Tuesday along the east coast of England and across East Yorkshire and North Yorkshire, The Met Office understands. It detailed the early outlook for the week's weather in one of its regular YouTube videos today.

Craig Snell, meteorologist for The Met Office, said: "The weather unfortunately is set to remain unsettled. Low pressure is always going to be close by, bringing further spells of rain in from the west and it'll be quite windy at times too, especially later on in the week. We could see some coastal gales come Thursday and Friday.

"Rain on Tuesday could turn heavy and persistent at times, especially across Lincolnshire and into Yorkshire. The best of the conditions come the afternoon probably down in South Wales and Southwest England but they'll still be the risk of a few showers there."

Communities are being urged to prepare for the risk of significant flooding for the rest of this week, regardless of whether they've been affected by flooding so far amid Storm Babet's destructive course. The total number of properties reported to have been flooded since the storm arrived in the UK is approximately 1,250. Rain will take a slow journey southwards by the end of the week, meaning dispersed and short-lived showers are possible in most regions.

Ian Simpson, forecaster with Netweather, said: "After a respite through Sunday and Monday, the east of Scotland will need to be prepared for some exacerbation of the flood risk through Tuesday. Parts of the Midlands and northern England will also be susceptible to further flooding. Brighter weather with some showers, these heavy and thundery near the south coast, will spread into southern areas during Tuesday and Wednesday.

"The long term outlook is for low-pressure systems to continue to track further south than usual as they head into western Europe, resulting in a continuation of the generally unsettled weather with rain belts interspersed with brighter, showery weather and temperatures generally close to the seasonal average."
