After the deaths and destruction comes the clean-up and costs.
The loss of at least nine lives in Storm Babet and the devastation in so many areas of the country shows the cruel side of nature. But how we deal with weather extremes fuelled by global pollution and halt the world-wide climate emergency is an issue that must not be dodged. Sticking our heads in the sand or pretending absolutely nothing can be done would both be historic, lethal mistakes.
We must also deal with the here and now and that includes insurance companies playing fair when claims are lodged, and Governments across the UK designing and building defences against floods. Exceptionally bad weather and downpours are, admittedly, difficult to shield us from.
But when what was once considered exceptional is occurring regularly and becoming the new normal, doing nothing isn’t a sensible option. People deserve help as well as the sympathy of those who run the country – whether that is from London, Cardiff, Edinburgh or Belfast.

As forces mass on Gaza’s border and attacks intensify in the enclave, wounded Israel’s expected invasion to combat Hamas appears to be nearing. The danger heightens too of a wider Middle East conflict when the slaughter of Palestinians – 4,600 and counting since 1,400 Israelis were butchered by Hamas – risks inflaming public outrage in neighbouring countries as well as Israel’s sworn enemies. The tragedy unfolding before our very eyes will result in many more lost lives. Peace and hope have never felt so faint.
