Tua Tagovailoa has impressed this season, but his and the Dolphins' doubters remain

Fox Sports' Colin Cowherd has stated that he does not see Miami Dolphins as Super Bowl contenders this season, despite the team putting up historic offensive numbers.

No team in NFL history has gained as many yards as this Dolphins team through six weeks to start the season, with head coach Mike McDanie l being lauded for his inventive playcalling with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa being an MVP candidate.

But after beating four teams that they were heavily expected to, the Dolphins did lose comfortably when they faced fellow Super Bowl contenders Buffalo Bills - which lead to some questions. One of those who is thoroughly unconvinced by the Dolphins Super Bowl credentials is Cowherd.

The FS1 host confessed the Dolphins have impressed while beating 'bad teams' but have not yet proved themselves against the elite opposition.

He said: "As of today, the Dolphins are like a lot of men in Miami, they're leasing a speedboat. Those are Gucci knockoffs. The watch really isn't gold, it's fake. They call them $40,000 millionaires, and Miami's got a lot of them. Miami is great at bullying bad teams. They have shown no indication they can go to toe to toe with the great teams."

The Dolphins have claimed impressive wins over the Los Angeles Chargers, Denver Broncos, New York Giants and Carolina Panthers. And while the Chargers might be playoff contenders, it appears the latter three could be in line for the No. 1 overall draft pick.

The Dolphins did look to be second-best in every aspect against the Bills, losing 48-20. This weekend, they will face the Philadelphia Eagles, who had been Super Bowl favourites to begin the season and have also started with a 5-1 record.

The Dolphins come into the game on Sunday Night Football as the underdog, with the Eagles boasting a strong defensive unit, as well as an explosive offensive themselves. Dolphins superstar wide receiver Tyreek Hill has spoken confidently ahead of the game, stating the team is ready for the challenge.

He said: "I mean obviously the fans (in Philadelphia) are going to be fans, regardless of who you play against. Some good, some nasty. I feel like playing this game, that’s what you have to expect sometimes, and that’s what I’m ready for. We’re just going to treat [the Eagles] like any other opponent. We’re going to go in there and play hard and do what we have to do to win.”

"I love it. This is what football is all about... going against a real good opponent, Sunday Night Football, no better stage. I feel like our guys are ready with the way we practiced today.”
