MTV Europe Music Awards axed due to 'safety concerns' amid Israel-Hamas war

The MTV EMAs will no longer go ahead as planned in Paris after the decision was made to cancel the prestigious event due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

The awards were due to be held in Paris at the Paris Nord Villepinte on November 5. However, MTV has axed the ceremony and the 30th annual music event will no longer take place.

MTV told The Mirror: "Given the volatility of world events, we have decided not to move forward with the 2023 MTV EMAs out of an abundance of caution for the thousands of employees, crew members, artists, fans, and partners who travel from all corners of the world to bring the show to life.

"The MTV EMAs are an annual celebration of global music. As we watch the devastating events in Israel and Gaza continue to unfold, this does not feel like a moment for a global celebration. With thousands of lives already lost, it is a moment of mourning. We look forward to hosting the MTV EMAs again in November of 2024."

If the awards event had gone ahead, it would have been the first time the EMAs had been held in Paris for 28 years. The annual awards ceremony features stars from across the music industry and is broadcast live on MTV in over 150 countries.

The last time the French capital hosted the awards, designer Jean-Paul Gaultier presented the ceremony while French president Emmanuel Macron was only 17-years-old. Since the show began in 1994 in Berlin, the MTV EMAs have been hosted in 23 European cities, with London the only one to have hosted it three times.

Last year's ceremony was hosted by Rita Ora and her film director husband Taika Waititi from PSD Bank Dome in Dusseldorf, Germany. Taylor Swift was the big winner on the night, taking home four awards from six nominations.

The 32-year-old singer took home the award for Best Video and Best Longform Video for her 110-minute version of All Too Well (Taylor's Version). She also picked up the gong for Best Artist and Best Pop.

Host Rita performed at the ceremony, with Bebe Rexha, Gorillaz, David Guetta, Ava Max, Muse and Lewis Capaldi, who made his EMAs debut, also took to the stage.
