A man has been hailed a “hero" after he prised apart an XL Bully's jaws as it attacked a dog near his home.

Liverpool local Danny Eaves was at home when he heard a noise outside, and saw someone on the ground and an XL Bully dog attacking a black springer spaniel on the road. The 43-year-old said he went straight outside, where he heard shouting and screaming, before putting his hands in the dog's mouth.

He said: "Everyone was quite animated, there was lots of shouting and screaming, but it's understandable. I walked away with the owner of the XL Bully and waited with him when he got a taxi from Queens Drive. I'm hoping it just had the dog by the skin on its neck, I didn't see if the spaniel was okay as I had the XL Bully. I've had dogs all my life so I've lost enough brain cells to run into something like that."

"I took control of the dog and walked it away, and to be fair they calmed down fairly well. It did shake me up a bit, there was a point where I had my hands in the dog's mouth and thought 'hang on, I'm the next target here'."

The Liverpool Echo reported that the former security worker didn’t have a scratch on him by “some miracle” following the incident.

Merseyside Police confirmed they were called to the incident on Monday and said the spaniel suffered minor injuries in the attack. They also confirmed they would not be investigating the incident any further.

At the start of September Rishi Sunak released a statement to say the American XL Bully breed will be banned by the end of the year following a spate of attacks up and down the country.
