The horrifying moment a giraffe crashes through family's car window has been captured on camera.

The scary moment happened when a family travelled to an animal park to catch a glimpse of the animals at close range. Kari Hill visited Fossil Rim Wildlife Center with her sons and one- year-old grand daughter. The wildlife attraction encourages guests to a take a self-guided tour where they can feed the animals.

Her family, from Texas, stopped their car by the giraffes and were astonished when one stuck its head through the car's sunroof. But somehow, after they had taken photographs, the long-necked animal lost its footing and fell on to the windscreen of Hill's Kia Sorrento. It then panicked leading to the glass windscreen to shatter before the animal found its footing again and ran off. The family were shocked by the shards of glass which covered them, but none of them was hurt in the freak episode.

A Fossil Rim spokesman said nothing had happened in his 11 years working at the park. He also confirmed the giraffe had not been hurt. The wildlife center says that all guests must agree to a liability waiver when they purchase tickets.

Hill said the incident with the giraffe could have been tragic and was pleased hers was the only carvwhich was damaged. Her insurance company did receive claim from her for windscreen damage and was was forced explain the unusual incident.

She told Fox 4: "I think it was hard for them, as anyone, not to laugh, but they were professional." Hill said to WFAA: “All was great until he lost his balance and fell onto my windshield.”

She added: “[The windshield] started caving in while he was flailing, trying to get his footing back. We were covered in glass, and I thought it was about to turn very bad, but then the giraffe regained his footing and took off.” Hill reportedly drove away quickly in her car and later pulled over to make sure “the kids got all the glass off of them.”

The cause of death for Penelope was listed as muscle trauma that arose as exertional rhabdomyolysis - which the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) says is the "breakdown of skeletal muscle as a result of excessive physical training, work, or exercise."

Cameron Zoo then said “Despite medical treatment, mum Penelope’s condition rapidly led to difficulty transitioning from lying down to standing up. In large animals such as giraffes, the inability to stand can lead to a multitude of issues, including further muscle damage, aspiration of stomach contents, and gastrointestinal disease.”
