A British boy, aged six, has tragically drowned in a hotel swimming pool during a family holiday in Cyprus.

The youngster, from Inverness, died after being found unconscious floating in the pool by his mother. He was pulled from the water by a lifeguard and taken to the Paphos General Hospital by an ambulance on October 6.

Doctors first praised the first aid efforts of staff at the hotel for saving his life. He was then taken to the Makario Children's Hospital in Nicosia, which around 90 miles away, for further specialised treatment.

But sadly he has since died from his injuries. "He was found unresponsive in the hotel pool by strangers on Friday," a source told The Daily Record initially after the incident. "He was on holiday with his mum, who I believe has another child with her. He was resuscitated at the scene but he is fighting for life in hospital. He's very, very sick."

The Paphos CID is investigating the incident while police said he had been on holiday with his mother and younger brother, reports The Sun. A spokesperson for the UK Government's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office said: "We are supporting the family of a British national in hospital in Cyprus."

A statement from Cyprus Police initially said: “On October 6th and about 13.20, police were informed that a six-year-old boy was found unconscious in a hotel's swimming pool in Paphos. The police investigations have shown that the boy escaped his mother's attention and fell in the swimming pool.

“A duty lifeguard gave first aid and then the boy was transferred to Paphos General Hospital. “Due to his health situation the boy was transferred at the Makarios Hospital in Nicosia, where he is being treated. His health condition is critical.”
