Region on the brink
The Middle East stands on the brink of a potentially devastating conflagration. Hezbollah forces’ incursion into northern Israel threatens to open up a new front in a conflict that has already cost too many lives.
Many fear the region could be engulfed in fighting on a scale not seen since the 1973 Yom Kippur War between Israel and an alliance of Arab states led by Syria and Egypt. Israel is understandably grieving after the slaughter of its citizens by Hamas terrorists.
These crimes against humanity could never have passed without a response and an operation by the Israeli Defence Force into Gaza is expected to be imminent. While Israel’s allies understand its determination to restore security, it must be hoped the military operation is proportionate.
At stake are the lives of innocent civilians on both sides and the stability of a region that has witnessed too much bloodshed.
Party of power
This year’s party conferences showed only one party is fit for government. In Liverpool, we saw a Labour Party which was united, ready to serve and brimming with ideas to transform the country.

By contrast, the Tories in Manchester were divided, moribund and blind to the damage they have inflicted in their 13 years in power. Keir Starmer used his speech to speak to the country and offer a road map for rebuilding Britain. Rishi Sunak was more interested in trying to appease the Tory right than fixing the mess his party has caused.
The Conservative conference was a reminder the party has long overstayed its welcome. Labour’s demonstrated they are a government in waiting with a serious agenda that will improve people’s lives, rescue our public services and restore our standing in the world.
The right Rod
Sir Rod Stewart deserves applause for refusing to perform in Saudi Arabia. More performers and sports stars need to follow Sir Rod’s moral compass.
