Neville's worrying Man Utd verdict as Onana hammered after latest error

Manchester United's season continues to underwhelm despite their late win against Brentford.

The dramatic win led to more questions than answers with issues plaguing Erik ten Hag' second season in charge. He's already seen his team lose numerous times, several of those at home, and they are in danger of losing touch with those at the top of the Premier League.

United will take on Sheffield United when they return from the international break, where nothing less than a win will do despite their injury list and problems surrounding their defence and goalkeeper.

Here's the latest news from Old Trafford.

Nev's major concerns

Gary Neville believes his former side are “way off” finishing in the top five this season after a rotten start to the campaign.

United were able to avoid defeat narrowly at the weekend but serious questions still hang over them. Already they've lost four of their eight league games whilst they've been beaten twice in the Champions League. The club were expected to push on after a promising season last term but look to have gone backwards.

Speaking on the Gary Neville Podcast, the former defender said: “I don’t think Manchester United will finish in the top five this season. I think they are way off it. And I’m surprised because seven or eight weeks ago, I had them third."

Onana hammered for latest error

Andre Onana has been told a schoolboy would have saved Mathias Jensen’s effort after the United goalkeeper made another mistake.

Garth Crooks has hammered the shot-stopper for failing to keep out the tame effort at Old Trafford on Saturday. His mistake allowed the visitors to take a 1-0 lead, with only Scott McTominay's late brace saving him. Pressure is mounting on Onana, who has made a serious of notable errors in the few weeks he's been at the club.

Former Tottenham striker Crooks wrote in his BBC Sport column : “It's hard enough trying to win matches when your goalkeeper is in good form, but when he's making errors almost on a weekly basis it makes life very difficult for all concerned. Especially when you've had Peter Schmeichel, Edwin van der Sar and David de Gea keeping goal for you during the past 20 years, it becomes very conspicuous when you have a goalkeeper who is not in their class.

“In fact, Andre Onana is not even on their planet. Since the arrival of the Manchester United keeper, he's been either smashing into centre-forwards, letting the ball slip through his fingers or, as was the case against Brentford, beaten by a shot a schoolboy would have been expected to save.”

Schmeichel struggles with McTominay stance

Peter Schmeichel claims he “doesn’t understand” Ten Hag’s approach to McTominay after his game-winning brace against Brentford.

The midfielder was bought on as a sub and his late heroics secured a 2-1 victory. It represented a remarkable turn of events for the academy graduate.

He previously looked set to leave Manchester amid interest from Premier League rivals West Ham, as well as Bayern Munich. Ten Hag has now admitted that he was keen to keep McTominay but did not dispute that the Red Devils would have been open to cashing in.
