A wedding is a brilliant way to show your friends and family your amazing taste in culture. From picking your favourite songs to fitting your favourite pop culture moments into speeches, it's a great opportunity to make your special day unique - and to divert from the traditional wedding format.

Some people choose to have more eccentric themes for their wedding, making their guests dress up like TV characters. These costume-themed weddings may seem peculiar to people who love tradition, but to pop culture obsessives think they are a great way to connect with each other and share their interests with their loved ones. One woman was bemused by her best friend's Game of Thrones themed wedding, particularly when she was asked to be a bridesmaid.

Taking to Reddit to confess her shock, the wedding guest explained that the bride and groom will be married dressed as their favourite characters "who are also either in a relationship or they think they should be", while the bridesmaids and groomsmen "will also be styled to look like other characters". Guests will be asked to wear the "house colours" of the character the bride or groom is dressed as, depending on which one invited them, and while the bride and groom have yet to assign her a character, she's adamantly against it.

Her best friend and her partner have long been obsessed with cult classic. During the pandemic they tried to develop interests together, and when they discovered Game of Thrones, "to say they got hooked is an understatement", explained the woman. "Aside from her chosen field of study and work, I have legitimately never seen [her] so passionate about something. It became her and [her fiancé's] life."

Suddenly the two were obsessed with the series. They watched it, read the books, and even started dressing up for conventions. "I thought it was super sweet, but I’m not much of a high fantasy person. I've heard the show is heavy on gore and sexual assault, which I have a lot of trouble sitting through." While the bride-to-be made an effort to get her interested, the pal declined and explained why. Since then, the bride has not made any effort to get her interested, saying she gets it.

"I'm worried that if I refuse to be a bridesmaid in her wedding due to her Game of Thrones theme, she'll actually take it poorly... I genuinely do not want to put money into dress, hair, makeup for me to be styled as an imaginary character for a wedding. It feels ridiculous," the friend revealed.

"I want [them] to have their special day, and I want it to be what they want, but I don't want to pay good money for what are essentially costumes of fake people. It feels weird, but I want to be supportive" she explained.

Redditors flocked to offer their advice and perspective, taking a relatively even-handed response. "They have a right to have wedding the way they want, you have no obligation to be a part of it. That said, instead of flat out backing out, you may consider being upfront about limits to your expenses and time commitment," they explained. "Also, if they both dress in red and get blonde hair, be concerned."

One Game of Thrones fan enthused about the theme, saying "I would love to be invited to a Game of Thrones themed wedding that ends up being just a red wedding re-enactment. But the reality is, you spend a lot of money on a wedding regardless of the theme and most of the time you never wear the items again. This is no different. At least you can resale the fantasy outfit because cosplayers love a deal."
