Summer was fun while it sort of lasted but with temperatures falling over the coming weeks it's back to condensation on the windows and big coats being dug out of wardrobes.

But it's not all bad news, autumn is the best time of the year to pick up a bargain ahead of Christmas, with the biggest event of the year on the horizon, Black Friday. The massive shopping day sees some huge discounts as shoppers spend billions on early festive gifts, or picking up reduced appliances they've had their eye on for a while.

We've broken down some of the key details ahead of the big day, including when you can expect early sales to begin.

What is Black Friday and when is it?

Black Friday falls the day after Thanksgiving, an annual national holiday in the United States, and is generally seen as the start of the holiday shopping season ahead of Christmas. It has gradually made its way into British culture over the past decade or so and sees many retailers like Amazon, John Lewis, Ninja and Argos offering big discounts across many categories, including tech, fashion and beauty and home appliances.

There have been some enormous discounts in recent years, with shoppers saving hundreds of pounds on high-price items like TVs and designer clothing.

This year Black Friday falls on November 24, but many deals will remain live until Cyber Monday. The weekend sees several days of low-priced shopping.

When is Cyber Monday 2023?

Cyber Monday falls on the immediate Monday after the Black Friday sale, so this year it will be on Monday, November 27, 2023. The 24-hour sale is often centered around tech deals, however more retailers across the likes of fashion and beauty are also getting involved.

When do early deals start ahead of Black Friday?

Several retailers begin offering some big discounts from the end of October and the start of November. There are other sale events starting even earlier, including from retail giant Amazon, which is hosting Prime Big Deal Days on October 10 and 11.

If it's all a bit of a minefield to you, be sure to follow the round-ups from our editors on when things are going on sale this year and the items we've reviewed and picked as the best for our Mirror Choice. Bookmarking the product pages on major retailer websites now can also help you easily track them down on the day.

Some retailers, including Ninja, allow customers to sign up to email newsletters so they can hear about any deals first. It can also be a good idea to make a list of items you actually need so you aren't tempted to splurge on impulse buys, have a read of our Black Friday survival guide for more tips.
