Should you side with the Emissary or the Hunter? Here's our guide that summarises the consequences of every possible choice in the Unearthed mission.

This guide contains major endgame spoilers for Starfield, we don't recommend reading further if you want to experience this mission unspoiled. One of Starfield's final big decisions is choosing whether to side with The Hunter or the Emissary – or to take the fight to both of them – which takes place during the main story mission 'Unearthed'. This mission takes place at the end of the main quest, which ultimately begins with the Into the Unknown mission.

During Unearthed you'll head to Nasa HQ on Earth and explore the area until you find the Artifact you've been searching for. Afterwards, you'll be greeted by the Emissary and the Hunter who will each urge you to join forces with them

The Emissary and the Hunter are both Starborn beings, with both of them having different ideals as to what to do with the Unity (which is basically a portal into alternate universes). As you would expect, siding with one will upset the other, so be prepared for a fight no matter which side you take.

Siding with the Hunter in Starfield

The Hunter is the option clearly designed to be the 'evil' one. While the Emissary wants to guard the Unity and choose who is worthy of being reborn, the Hunter believes that anyone who reaches the unity has earned the right no matter who or what they had to get through to get there.

After you side with them, the Hunter will want you to take out Keeper Aquilus. You can either kill him or persuade him to go into hiding, if you do the latter you'll also need to convince the Hunter that you killed Aquilus. You'll then head into the mission Revelation where the Hunter will join you as you battle Starborn foes. The end of this mission will see you taking out the Emmisary (or persuading him to leave), however, if you do kill them you'll get the Eternity's Gate beam rifle.

Siding with the Emissary in Starfield

The Emissary is the more lawful good choice out of the two as it wants to guard the Unity only allowing those who are worthy of becoming Starborn through. Unlike the Hunter, you don't have to go and assassinate someone, you'll be popped straight into Revelation which is the exact same mission, except this time, you'll be joined by The Emissary and need to take out the Hunter at the end. If you kill The Hunter you get the Unmitigated Violence Laser Rifle, which you won't get if you persuade them to leave.

Siding with neither in Starfield

If you side with neither and go into business for yourself, you'll be plopped into the Revelations mission alone. This time you'll be fighting the forces of both the Hunter and the Emissary. However, greater risk yields greater rewards as you can take out both Starborn foes and get both the Unmitigated Violence Laser Rifle and the Eternity's Gate beam rifle.

Should you side with the Emissary or Hunter in Starfield?

For the sheer spectacle and rewards on offer, we think siding with neither the Emissary nor the Hunter is the best option overall. But that's only if you like a challenge, as choosing this option will make the final mission a lot harder, as you'll have to fight them both to finish the game. This route is pretty spectacular and you do get both the Unmitigated Violence Laser Rifle and the Eternity's Gate beam rifle, so we think it's worth the trouble.
