The National Television Awards returned with enough tears and shocking moments to last viewers a lifetime. Television's most glamorous night saw fan-favourite stars fill up London's O2 Arena to receive well-deserved awards.
Comedian Joel Dommett hosted the evening as the likes of The Traitors, Happy Valley, Paul O'Grady : For The Love of Dogs, Gogglebox, and The 1% Club took home awards. Unsurprisingly, Ant and Dec took home yet another gong when they won the Best Presenter award for the 22nd year in a row.
In between the awards, there were several moments that left viewers at home shocked as they took to social media to discuss the jokes and awkward silences. Before a winner was even named, things got awkward as host Joel gave This Morning a shout out - saying "everyone loves" the ITV show - only for the room to be filled with a chorus of boos.
After the excitement of the NTAs, Mirror has put together a list of all the wildest moments from this year's event...
Moments after NTAs started, eagle-eyed fans noticed This Morning being booed when they were given a shout-out. The boos came months after former ITV host Phillip Schofield stepped down from the channel after admitting to an "unwise but not illegal" affair with a younger male colleague.
Gogglebox star shows off three stone weight loss in impressive year apart snapsHolly continues to present the show alongside fan-favourites Alison Hammond, Dermot O'Leary, Josie Gibson, Rochelle Humes and more. Piers Morgan also got a harsh welcome from those inside the arena. Due to the drama surrounding Phillip, This Morning has been in crisis mode and it was recently reported there were fears that the show would be booed following his recent exit.
Meanwhile, Holly has been enjoying a summer break away from the show and recently shared a letter saying: "Having been lucky enough to have this summer break to focus on the children, it’s now lovely to be back on the sofa and there was certainly joy in abundance with Alison Hammond today!
"This wonderful lady has been nominated in the best presenter category at tomorrow night’s NTAs and there is still time to vote for her. So, if you’ve ever been filled with joy by The Hammond…and let’s be honest, who hasn’t?!…then you know what to do!"
Accepting the Bruce Forsyth Entertainment Award on Tuesday, Gogglebox's Lee took to the stage to make a speech but admitted he had "three vodkas in the hotel" ahead of the event. Lee was joined by his co-star and best friend Jenny as well as other members of the Gogglebox cast.
The Hull native was so shocked to win the award that he confessed he hadn't prepared a speech. He accepted the award from Dannii Minogue and admitted to the audience and viewers at home that he had a few drinks to give himself some confidence before the show.
Viewers found it hilarious as they took to social media to joke that Lee was "smashed". One said: "Jenny our Gogglebox national treasure taking the stage. You know Lee & Jenny are going to get more drunk tonight." Someone else commented: "Frigging love gogglebox, especially Jenny and Lee! You can tell they were so shocked to win over Ant and Dec. A win for 'normal' working class people."
Another added: "Love our Lee and Jenny," whilst a fourth said: "Think Lee was p****d. He certainly milked it. Well done Gogglebox." "Lee is smashed," commented another viewer. Gogglebox was up against Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! and The Masked Singer.
Former This Morning host Phillip Schofield shocked fans when he made a sudden appearance at the awards show tonight. The former presenter missed out on the award show for the first time as his former co-star Holly Willoughby was set to do it alone. It comes after he was axed from the ITV programme.
Phillip was not expected to attend the biggest night in television at London's O2 as he was spotted earlier on in the day looking glum outside a gastropub in the capital city. However, in an unexpected turn of events, Phillip made an appearance on the big screen right in front of the large celebrity crowd and his former This Morning co-stars.
A tribute to the late Paul O'Grady was aired during the awards ceremony. During the clip, Phillip could be seen in the background. The disgraced presenter was spotted on the big screen as a snippet of the Lily Savage star winning an award was shown. Phillip was up against Paul and lost to the much-loved comedian.
Gogglebox star teases return as Channel 4 prepares to mark 10 years of hit showHappy Valley's Sarah Lancashire shocked viewers when the BBC show won an award at the event on Tuesday evening. The series was a hot topic among fans earlier this year when it dropped. It stars the likes of James Norton as Tommy Lee Royce and Sarah as the one and only Catherine Cawood.
The series returned to screens after seven years off air and left fans speechless with its dramatic conclusion. The show even broke records and its huge finale had 7.5 million viewers gripped. At the NTAs, James and Sarah were up for Best Drama performance and fans rushed to social media after finding out that Sarah Lancashire had not only won that award but Happy Valley triumphed in the Returning Drama category.
However, many fans were astonished after hearing her real accent while she was giving a speech, with one person posting: " I’m always shocked when I hear Sarah Lancashire's real voice #NTAs," as a second penned: "Me expecting Sarah Lancashire to have a Yorkshire accent but has a posh one instead."
A third puzzled viewer commented: "Hearing Sarah Lancashire's actual accent and not her Yorkshire accent is jarring. #NTAs #NTAs2023," as a fourth shared: "You mean to tell me Sarah Lancashire isn’t poppin’ about with a proper Yorkshire accent??? I am shook. #NTAs."
After winning the Best Serial Drama Performance award against huge stars, EastEnders star Danielle Harold broke down in tears. The star is known for her role as Lola Pearce-Brown in the long-running BBC soap and viewers were so impressed with her role that they voted for her to win on Tuesday.
When Danielle was awarded the impressive achievement by Michelle Collins, the pair left the NTA stage together with their arms wrapped around each other. A source at the event said to The Mirror it was a "very emotional and cute moment". The audience gave Danielle a standing ovation.
The source added: "They were going nuts with their screaming for her." Walford gathered to say goodbye to the character earlier this year, who died from a brain tumour.
Viewers watched emotional scenes at Lola's funeral as her white coffin was carried into the service, with messages from her friends and family written on the sides. Lexi showed everyone a video she had made, featuring clips of Lola from before and during her brain tumour diagnoses. Lola was diagnosed with the illness last year and soon learned she didn't have long to live.
Fans usually look forward to watching which daytime programme takes home the award, but things were a little different this year. The Repair Shop ended up taking the top prize in the category, beating This Morning as well as The Chase and Loose Women.
However, fans couldn't help but notice Holly looked close to tears as she and the This Morning team missed out on the NTA award for the first time in 13 years following Phillip Schofield's exit from the ITV daytime show.
Taking to Twitter, one fan wrote: "Holly looks close to tears." Another shared: "Holly looks likes she’s about to burst into tears when the repair shop won the award #NTAs."
