Sir Rod Stewart yesterday delivered on his promise to pay for scans for patients on the NHS waiting list.

The rock legend also spoke up for nurses, again saying that they deserve a pay rise.

While we applaud Sir Rod’s kindness, it is a damning indictment of the state of the health service that patients are having to rely on
goodwill to get the treatment they need.

If the NHS had been properly funded by this Tory Government people would not be having to wait weeks simply to get an appointment.

On every metric, the NHS is struggling to provide the service that patients deserve.

Waiting lists and ambulance response times are at a record high, while patient satisfaction is at a record low.

This is not the fault of the dedicated staff who work in the NHS. They are doing the best they can in the most testing of circumstances.

It is the fault of a Tory administration that has long failed to invest in a health service that was once the envy of the world.

Power failure

In next month’s Budget Jeremy Hunt will remove a lifeline for families and firms.

The Chancellor is set to raise the energy price cap to £3,000 and scale back support for businesses by as much as 80%.

It will mean further misery for households and more companies fighting to survive.

Mr Hunt will be condemning more people to choosing between heating and eating, while inflicting huge economic damage on busi- nesses already battered by Brexit and Covid.

The Government will try to blame the war in Ukraine for the soaring energy costs.

But people are also paying the price for the Tories’ failure to invest in renewables and their decision to axe support for home insulation.
