Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has revealed how Trey Lance has already been making an impact behind the scenes.
Lance was traded from the San Francisco 49ers to the Cowboys last week after two seasons with the NFC West franchise. The No.3 overall pick from the 2021 NFL Draft had played just eight games, with Dallas sending a future fourth-round pick in exchange for the 23-year-old.
Prior to being traded, Lance was told by the Niners that he would have been the third-choice quarterback for the 2023 season. Brock Purdy was named as the starter, with Sam Darnold listed as the backup.
Even though Lance has moved to Dallas, he will likely still have to settle for being the N0.3 quarterback on the roster. Dak Prescott will be the starter, while Cooper Rush is expected to be the backup to the veteran QB.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones revealed after the trade that he did not consult either Prescott or McCarthy prior to reaching an agreement with the Niners. And now McCarthy has had a few days to work with the young quarterback.

“Very hard-working,” McCarthy told the Dallas Morning News when asked his first impressions of Lance. “We have a quarterback meeting room area. He’s pretty much kind of taken it over.
“The grease boards look like ‘Beautiful Mind.’ We just need to work on the extra things, particularly in the area of footwork.”
Lance will likely need to bide his time in his first season with the Cowboys, and part of that will be learning from Prescott along the way. Prescott is about to enter his eighth season in the NFL, and with that will come a great deal of experience of playing in the league.
In his first days as a Cowboys quarterback, Lance was asked about whether or not he had interacted with Prescott. And Lance has explained how the veteran QB was very welcoming following his arrival.
"He welcomed me with open arms," Lance told the on Tuesday. "It meant a lot to me. This business is crazy but, for me, I'm not looking forward, at all.
“I'm just trying to take it one day at a time. This guy has played at a very high level for a long time so, obviously, just tonnes of respect for him, as I think he deserves and gets from across the league. I'm just trying to learn everything I possibly can from him."
