If we are what we eat then many of us are in serious trouble, because 60% of the food we consume is unhealthy.

The spread of ultra-processed meals, particularly in the fresh-food deserts of our poorer neighbourhoods, is a blight that could lead to early graves from heart attacks and strokes.

Food expert Henry Dimbleby calls the findings a wake-up call – and now the alarm is ringing loudly, the country requires politicians prepared to improve the nation’s health rather than paying lip service to the need for change.

Polling has also found significant public support for what too many Tories dismiss as “nanny state” interventions to improve the quality of our food and lives.

So there is no excuse for fatal inaction when lives are at stake and public opinion is behind drives to put the health of Britons ahead of the interests of makers selling damaging goods.

Should these firms continue to let us down, then tough laws on food content and curbs on advertising must follow.

People in poorer areas, in particular, deserve the opportunity to purchase cheaper, healthier food instead of once again enduring a raw deal.

Diabetes hope

When our wonderful National Health Service is allowed to operate properly, it is the envy of the world.

The programme to spare tens of thousands of 18 to 39-year-olds the danger of developing Type-2 diabetes is a case in point.

We fully support this fantastic prevention drive, with plans to monitor patients closely and advise them how to stave off diabetes.

The NHS is under severe pressure, so we must never ignore its successes and the way it performs near-miracles on a daily basis.

Dank holiday

We salute all those who won’t allow the bad weather to get them down over this Bank Holiday break.

And let us all be grateful that some unlucky souls are working so the more fortunate may enjoy a day off – come rain or shine.
