Love Island's Kaz cries as she recalls being locked up with baby in UAE jail

Former Love Island star Kaz Crossley broke down in tears in the middle of a podcast as she relived the horror of being slammed in jail in Abu Dhabi where she met a fellow inmate who had been jailed for having a baby out of wedlock.

The 28-year-old reality star struggled to fight back tears as she shared the heartbreaking story of a fellow inmate who had been imprisoned purely for having a baby. Kaz – who was a contestant on season four of Love Island back in 2018 – was jailed herself on suspicion of drug offences.

Kaz was held by police after being detained at Abu Dhabi airport while transferring to a flight to Thailand earlier this year. She then spent four days in jail while her case was investigated.

During her time behind bars, Kaz met a fellow inmate who had been living behind bars for six months – and had been arrested after she gave birth to a child without being married to the child’s father. Cops had arrested the young mother and jailed her just two days after she welcomed her child via a cesarean section operation.

Kaz recounted the heartbreaking tale while discussing her time in an Abu Dhabi jail while a guest on the Saving Grace podcast – hosted by Grace Eleanor Keeling, also known as GK Barry. Kaz explained: “There was a baby. There was a six month old baby inside jail with me.

“In Abu Dhabi, it’s illegal to have kids if you’re not married to the person you’re having the child with. The child was with the mother in jail.

“She had the baby and it was a cesarean. She was in hospital and her friend actually drove her to Abu Dhabi hospital because she was in labour. So stupidly the friend wasn’t thinking, she wasn’t thinking, and she had the baby in hospital.”

Explaining further, she continued: “She was in hospital for, I think, two days and the police came into the jail and put her in handcuffs and she just two days [ago had a] cesarean. And put her in jail with the baby. And she had been in there for six months when I came in.”

Kaz then broke down in tears as she recalled holding the baby in her own hands while behind bars. She recalled: “Me being in the lowest point, probably of my whole life, and holding this baby…”

She then broke down and had to halt the interview as she shed tears over the memory – while show host Grace sourced tissues for the reality star. Abu Dhabi is part of the United Arab Emirates – where there are strict laws that relate to pregnancies and parenting. Article 410 of the Federal Law No: 31 of 2021 explicitly warns about having a child out of wedlock.

The laws dictate that anyone who has sexual intercourse with women over the age of 18 who are unmarried and the intercourse results in a birth will be jailed for a minimum of two years. Abortion is also illegal in the UAE, unless there is a risk of the life of the parent or there is evidence the child will be born with a fatal health condition.

Kaz previously addressed the allegations about her after she was arrested in February. Her arrest appeared to be linked to a video of her from 2020 in which she was filmed in Dubai while there appeared to be lines of a suspicious powder on display near her.

Addressing her arrest and the past video in an Instagram post this year, she said: "So in 2020 I was in Dubai and I was filmed, it was me in the video. No one forced me to do that. It was a time in my life where I definitely didn't love myself at all. And this is reflected in what I was doing to my body and who I surrounded myself with."

She added: "I wasn't thinking. I was then detained in Abu Dhabi and kept in custody from Monday through to Friday which is when they released me. I was very accepting of the situation."
