Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League had a very long breakdown in tonight's stream, as we got our first proper look at the gameplay.

PlayStation State of Play's main event was an extended look at Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Rocksteady Studios showed off cutscenes, developer interviews and, of course, gameplay for the upcoming title and also confirmed the game will have the rumoured battle pass

Set in the 'Arkhamverse' (the universe in which Rocksteady's Batman trilogy took place), you take on the role of either Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang and – the only character anyone will want to play as – King Shark. Your task is to kill the Justice League, who have been corrupted by Braniac because of course they wouldn't let you actually be bad guys.

The game looks like a mix of Crackdown and the Arkham games as you and the Squad run around shooting giant ships and turrets with what looks like big glowing nipples attached to them. So that's going to either really get you going, or put you off entirely. Or perhaps that's just a me issue.

The gameplay from the PlayStation State of Play shows the Suicide Squad taking on waves of Brainiac's soldiers to get to a massive artillery gun and save the world. Typical bad guys. Depending on who you play as, your combat and traversal style will change somewhat, as will individual abilities.

It's definitely a far cry from the Batman Arkham series, picking up five years after the events of Batman: Arkham Knight. The game's FAQ says that players of the Arkham series will see some "related elements" in the game, so it appears to be cementing itself as a unique and separate experience.

Battle buddies

Rocksteady finally confirmed the Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League battle pass, which is a post-launch cosmetics-only affair. Players can earn new outfits, emotes, and various other items to customise their characters. The battle pass will be comprised of both free and premium tiers so you can fork out if you want to. But the items you can access won't affect gameplay, so there's no pressure to spend money for unlocks.

In other good news, there's cross-platform play for co-op so you don't have to worry about not being able to play with your buddies on different systems.

In terms of post-launch content, Rocksteady has teased new characters and missions, all of which will be available at no extra cost.
