Resident Evil 4 remake will be even scarier with free PSVR 2 update

Capcom has confirmed that development has started on a PSVR 2 version of the upcoming Resident Evil 4 remake, and owners of the game will be getting it as a free DLC.

The Resident Evil 4 remake has been highly anticipated after the excellent remake of Resident Evil 2, and the slightly-less-excellent-but-pretty-good Resident Evil 3 remake. Resident Evil 4 isn’t even out yet – it’s set to release on March 24, 2023 – but that hasn’t stopped Capcom from revealing some post-launch content for the game. The PS5 version of the Resident Evil 4 remake is getting free DLC in the form of an exclusive PSVR 2 mode.

Capcom’s Japanese Resident Evil account @BIO_OFFICIAL announced the news by saying that a VR version has started development, and to stay tuned for more details. The account later followed this up by confirming that VR mode will be distributed as free DLC for PS5 on its PSVR 2 headset. There is no mention of Meta Quest 2 or other VR platforms, but considering the VR modes for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Resident Evil Village are exclusive to PlayStation platforms, it’s probably safe to assume this is the case for Resident Evil 4.

Ah, I’ll buy it at a high price!

Considering the VR mode has just started development, I doubt we’ll see it for a while. Resident Evil Village launched in May 2021, and its VR mode was announced last June; and that's only just released with the PSVR 2 launch this week. So maybe we can expect a similar timeframe for this. At the very least it sounds like the headset is up to the challenge if our PSVR 2 review is anything to go by.

Hopefully, this VR mode is similar to the Meta Quest 2 version of the original Resident Evil 4, which moved the game into first-person, rather than a VR mode where you’re just watching the game with the headset on and can look around.

Speaking as someone who can’t play VR games without feeling sick instantly, even I can tell that Resident Evil is a perfect fit for the medium. Capcom’s dedication to supporting VR with its flagship series is one of the few things that makes me jealous of those who can play VR (that and Astrobot Rescue Mission anyway).

Even better is knowing it’s at no extra cost; the Capcom of ten-years-ago would nickel-and-dime you for DLC that was already on the disc, so this is yet another nice reminder of how much the company has turned things about since the PS3 era.
