A person has died and two men have been arrested after a car that was being chased by police collided with another vehicle.

Norfolk Police said a Land Rover Defender was being pursued by officers investigating the suspected theft of a vehicle in Suffolk when it collided with a Nissan Juke. One person in the Nissan Juke was pronounced dead at the scene, the force said. The horror crash took place on the A143 in Earsham, Norfolk, shortly after 4.30pm yesterday.

The occupants of the Land Rover, two men in their 20s and 40s, have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Both were treated in hospital for injuries sustained in the collision. The incident has been referred by police to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) by Norfolk and Suffolk Constabularies.

An IOPC spokesperson told the Mirror: "We can confirm we have decided to independently investigate police actions prior to a fatal road traffic collision in Norfolk on Sunday afternoon (13 August). We understand police had been pursuing a Land Rover Defender before it collided with a Nissan Juke on the A143 soon after 4.30pm.

"After being notified by Norfolk Police, we sent investigators to the scene and to the police post incident procedure to begin our enquiries."

An eyewitness who wished to remain anonymous told the Mirror: "The Land Rover was being chased down a country road and pulled straight out onto the a143 without stopping, then drove very aggressively up and down the side verges trying to get around the cars on the road before losing control a few moments later. I’ve never seen anything like it.

"There were four police cars on scene within seconds and it looked like the driver of the Juke was pulled from the vehicle and CPR started immediately. They should have been stopped before they got to such a busy road, and now sadly and frustratingly an innocent lady has lost her life. "
