Netflix Poisoned documentary has viewers squirming at 'dirty truths' about food

Netflix's latest food documentary Poisoned has left viewers disgusted at current food regulations, and some have even pledged to up sticks and live out on a farm to avoid purchasing food from the expert's 'do not buy' list. On the streaming service, the documentary is said to "examine the problem of deadly foodborne illness in the US through revealing interviews with experts and victims' families".

Viewers quickly became queasy after they learned that regular groceries, like bagged salads, chicken and sprouts are far more dangerous than they seem, as the truth about the products are brought to life by filmmaker Stephanie Soechtig as she investigates how the food industry manages foodborne pathogens, such as E.Coli.

The film is said to be based on Jeff Benedict’s hard-hitting book, Poisoned: The True Story of the Deadly E. Coli Outbreak That Changed the Way Americans Eat. The synopsis for the show poses the question: "Our policymakers and food industry execs have been unrelenting in suggesting America’s food is 'the safest in the world,' but how can they protect us when it isn’t?"

Having watched Netflix go into detail about cover-ups and criminal prosecutions occurring because of the food industry, viewers took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the show, with many declaring it a "must-watch". One wrote: "Just watched the #Poisoned documentary on Netflix and now I can no longer eat romaine or bagged lettuce, cantaloupe, sprouts and chicken. A MUST WATCH. So important."

NO BAG SALADS EVER AGAIN."

A fourth typed: "Y’all go watch the #Poisoned documentary on Netflix. I’ve barely ate the past few days. All I know is I need to buy a farm," and a fifth added: "Well it looks like after watching the #poisoned doc on Netflix I’m just going to never eat food again unless I grow it myself. I’ll let you know how that goes. How things aren’t more regulated is insane. It’s literally people’s well-being & lives!!!!"
