Shoplifters targeted Leeds City Centre, Fitzrovia West and Soho in London, and the Lanes in Brighton and Hove more than anywhere else in England and Wales in 2022 - and now you can track crime in your area too.

According to Home Office figures, there was a 22 percent increase in shoplifting offences last year, soaring from 256,000 to 314,000. Recent Statista data has found the number of criminal offences recorded by police in England and Wales rose to approximately 6.74 million in 2022/23, compared to 6.34 million in the previous year.

The area of Cleveland, in North Yorkshire, made up of Hartlepool, Stockton-on-Tees and Middlesbrough, recorded the worst crime figures for anywhere in the country. There were approximately 147.7 crimes per 1,000 people in this location, compared with the England and Wales average of 93.6.

The Statista data highlights that Yorkshire, the North East, and the North West had the highest crime rates across all UK regions. The South West had the lowest crime rate, with 69.9 crimes per 1,000 people.
