A drunken mother-of-three lobbed a glass at another woman’s head after losing her temper in a Hull pub - causing nasty cuts to the victim’s forehead.

Jessica Newton, 27, was “10 out of 10” on the drunkenness scale, and “wouldn’t leave it alone” when she engaged in a confrontation with the other woman, Hull Crown Court heard.

The glass Newton used to strike the woman smashed into pieces. The argument then continued outside the pub with Newton hitting the other woman twice more. She was charged with actual bodily harm on April 18 last year. Newton, from Bransholme, Hull, admitted the charges. Newton has been banned from the pub for five years and was ordered to pay £450 compensation to the victim.

Prosecutor Richard Butters said the victim was spending the night with her husband, son, and extended family in King Edward pub in Anlaby Road, west Hull, in the early hours of the morning, HullLive reports. Newton said something after approaching the husband and son.

After Newton became aggressive, the woman told her: “Shut your mouth”, to which Newton replied, “What did you say?”. “Shut your gob”, the woman retorted.

The next thing the woman knew a glass was being swung towards her face by Newton, who was holding it in her right hand. "It happened extremely quickly, as these things often do," said Mr Butters.

"The complainant had no opportunity whatsoever to react or in any way defend herself. She felt a powerful hit to her face. The force of the strike knocked her back off her seat and onto the floor and the glass shattered around her."

"The complainant recalls speaking to the bar staff and people were checking on her." Newton went out into the street and the woman went to confront her about what she had done. "Her son's friend had to hold her back," said Mr Butters.

Newton ran towards the woman and hit her twice. She suffered cuts and bruises to her face, mainly on the forehead area, and there was glass inside some of the cuts. They were cleansed in the hospital and the glass pieces were removed.

The woman's handbag and phone went missing during the incident. "If this incident hadn't taken place, she would still have them," said Mr Butters. “She feels gutted by this incident as it had been a nice day before. She felt angry and upset by the whole incident.”

The woman later said: "After this happened, I didn't leave the house and I turned down invites to go anywhere. I find that I am really worried and on edge. I just felt degraded and embarrassed along with a whole range of other emotions. I have struggled to make sense of the incident. I did not deserve to be assaulted at all."

Kristina Goodwin, mitigating, said the fact that the glass was thrown meant it was not a highly dangerous weapon, claimed Miss Goodwin. "The injuries, very thankfully, were superficial and were requiring of a very minor intervention. There are some ongoing difficulties when she is out in town."

Newton did not offer any excuses and had consistently expressed how ashamed she was. "She is nothing but horrified at her actions," said Miss Goodwin.
