NFL player Josh Allen made a bold claim about iconic quarterback Aaron Rodgers, suggesting the New York Jets star cheated at a recent golf tournament.

The 27-year-old has claimed some believe the New York Jets player cheated to win the amateur AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am golf tournament back in February. During an appearance on a Barstool Sports podcast, the Buffalo Bills player simply said “yeah” when asked if Rodgers cheated.

However, he then tried to backtrack and claimed he heard the claims from other people. “He may have gotten seven or eight strokes too many at Pebble Beach, or nine,” Allen said. “That’s from what other sources are saying, I’m not saying that.”

The 39-year-old and his team won the event by one shot at Spyglass Hill, but some are not convinced he did it fairly. Allen, who also participated in the tournament, said Rodgers “sandbagged” the entire golf course, meaning he did not tell the truth about his handicap in order to make his level seem worse than it is.

According to Golf Digest, the former NFL MVP’s handicap was listed at 10, though he usually sits at three. At the event, Rodgers found his groove during the first round and rode his momentum all the way to an excellent victory.

“I had no confidence coming in,” Rodgers said at the time. “I shot 86 at Sherwood on Monday and that was with a couple balls in my pocket on some holes.” Rodgers contributed 27 strokes to the team's 26-under par victory, and at the time Allen questioned the legitimacy of the victory. “It's only three rounds and a 2.6 handicap got 10 shots? Come on now,” the Bills ace said. "I don't know. I'm not the person to ask that question. But it is what it is.”

Fast forward six months from the golf tournament and Rodgers is preparing for his first NFL season with the Jets. He agreed to a new two-year contract worth $75 million (£59m), and bids to help the franchise end its playoff absence and pursue a Super Bowl title. The veteran is set to turn 40 in December, but Rodgers plans to play multiple seasons in New York.

"This is going to be a few years partnership. I feel great about what I’m making (in his contract),” Rodgers said via Express US. "It wasn’t really a negotiation, it was an easy conversation between me and Joe, talking about the state of the team and the opportunities that could be out there.”

Jets coach Robert Selah claimed he would have been shocked if the NFL icon chose not to play more than one season with his new franchise given the enthusiasm he has displayed so far. "I just want him to have fun and know that when he walks in this building to let loose and have a little bit of fun, B.S. with the guys, come in the office, come talk to us, and just enjoy playing football,” the coach said.

"Odds are, if you enjoy playing football, you're going to want to keep doing it. I wouldn't put pressure on him to commit to something like that anyway, but I'd be shocked if he doesn't play multiple years. He looks like a little kid out there."
