A day at the beach turned into a horror movie for a few lifeguards that discovered a dead body in the California waters.

A lifeguard at Malibu Lagoon State Beach opened a plastic drum that was brought in from the water by a maintenance worker and was shocked to discover a decomposing human body inside.

According to reports, a maintenance worker first noticed the plastic drum floating out in the water early in the morning. They took a kayak and brought it in - but decided not to open it, as that wasn't really in their duties, and it was heavy.

Later in the afternoon, when a lifeguard came in for their shift, they noticed the same drum floating in the water again as it had gotten sucked in by the tides. The individual swam out and retrieved it, dragging it onto the shore. It was very heavy - and the lifeguard was left horrified at what they found inside the vessel.

"They got in a kayak and went out to get it, brought it to shore," said Lt. Hugo Reynaga with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. "Apparently, it was too heavy, and they didn't want to open it, and they left it on shore."

The body has not yet been identified and no public announcements have been made as to who the victim inside the barrel was, but police reports show the body was removed from the drum early Monday and sent to the coroner for an autopsy that may reveal what happened. The body belonged to a male.

A murder investigation is now ongoing, with authorities flabbergasted as to where the plastic container could have possibly came from. They're also hoping to get clues or insight about how this person died and see if there are any other traces of DNA or other evidence that may hint at who is responsible for this crime.

Apparently, calls have been made from individuals reporting spotting the drum floating around near beaches throughout the weekend. Authorities say that the barrel has a printing company chemical label on it.

Former Malibu Mayor Jefferson Wagner said “I thought it was a toxic waste container when I saw it,” Wagner said. “This is not what happens in Malibu,” Wagner said, adding that he was “deeply disturbed. This is not a common occurrence. I mean, bodies in a barrel is just sad.”
