The grandchildren of the late Princess Margaret often fade into the background when it comes to shining in the spotlight focused on the Royal Family.

They lead largely normal lives and only appear in public at the occasional national event, such as a royal weddings, services of thanksgiving or funerals. One of them is Margaret's grandson, Samuel Chatto, who is hardly ever featured in the headlines, despite being a relative of King Charles.

And today marks Sam's 26th birthday - and he has made quite the name for himself when it comes to his love of artistic and creative pursuits.

Sam is the eldest of Princess Margaret's four grandchildren. As well as him there is his younger brother, Arthur Chatto and their two cousins, Charles Armstrong-Jones, Viscount Linley and Lady Margarita Armstrong-Jones.

His parents are Margaret's daughter Lady Sarah Chatto and her husband Daniel, who married in July 1994 and also have a younger son called Arthur. Sam was born in London and like many members of his family he was educated at Eton College. Upon leaving, he went on to study history of art at the University of Edinburgh.

The royal takes after his mother with his interest in art and is a keen potter. Having completed a six-week apprenticeship with North Shore Pottery, Sam had three pots in a show in Somerset. Sam - who delights his 97.5k Instagram followers with his enlightening and positive posts - spoke of his excitement for his apprenticeship.

A few years ago, he wrote: "2018 was such an incredible year of self reflection and growth for me. I spent six weeks in the very north of Scotland immersed in pottery and ceramics, being taught by the most patient and passionate potter. Clay consumed my every waking hour and I am so excited to see what I can achieve this year!"

As well as his talent for pottery, the young royal is a trained yoga instructor having completed a 200-hour yoga teacher training course in India at the end of 2018. He called the experience “incredibly eye-opening”. Last September, Sam was pictured attending the late Queen's funeral service in London and later joined his family for King Charles' Coronation in May.

His grandmother Princess Margaret was the youngest daughter of King George VI and the sister of the late Queen. In 1960, she married society photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones, who became 1st Earl of Snowdon, at Westminster Abbey.

The couple went on to have two children, David Armstrong-Jones, no the Earl of Snowdon (b. 1961) as well as Lady Sarah Chatto. Margaret and her husband made history in 1978 when they became the first senior royals to divorce since Henry VIII. Their children stayed at Kensington Palace with their mother, until they left to start their own families.
