We already knew Call of Duty 2023 would be coming this year, but a recent leak has seemingly confirmed it'll be called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Call of Duty 2023 is expected to release later this year, and with the official reveal seemingly imminent, it seems energy drink manufacturer Monster Energy might have jumped the gun by leaking the game name, logo, protagonist and main villain. The images were originally posted on Twitter by @algebra_sloth via @charlieINTEL, with the leak showing the apparent Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 logo, with Captain Price – one of the main protagonists from Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2 – featuring on the artwork.

And although it's not entirely clear, the artwork also seems to show famous Call of Duty villain Vladimir Makarov behind Price, who was of course the main antagonist in the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which was released back in 2011. Ah, you've got to love Activision's naming scheme.

Speaking of Activision, the publisher has got involved in the social media banter by essentially confirming the leak is correct, with the official @CallofDuty Twitter account cheekily stating: "Whew. Mondays. Anyone have an energy drink they can spare?"

Out of the bag

Call of Duty developer Sledgehammer Games, who's taking lead on Call of Duty 2023, also changed its Twitter banner in the wake of the leak, with the new logo featuring the same three red lines shown in the leaked artwork – making it even more likely that the leaked name and logo is the correct one.

The release of Modern Warfare 3 can't come soon enough for Call of Duty: Warzone players, with the release of Season 4 Reloaded being the final straw for some, after the update ruined performance on PC (via reddit). The update also introduced several characters from TV show The Boys, so budding supes now able to take out opponents with laser beams from their eyes. Yes, really.

Activision will officially be revealing the first details about Call of Duty 2023 in early August, ahead of the launch of Warzone Season 5, with the publisher previously stating that weapons, operators, weapons and bundles will carry over from Modern Warfare 2 to the new title later this year.

That makes perfect sense considering there were rumours around whether this game would even be a full release so players will appreciate being able to carry over content they've unlocked.
