A restaurant has hit out at a family that "crossed the line" with children "encouraged" as they "destroyed" part of the garden and left behind an "appalling" amount of mess.

The Priory in Caerleon, Newport, posted a "little rant" on Facebook where it said it would not accept damage to its property or for its staff to be disrespected.

It followed guests, who according to the highly regarded restaurant, allowed their children to mess around in the garden and attack hand carved statues with sticks. The Priory is based in a historic building dating back centuries and it said that ball games along with other bad behaviour would not be accepted in the grounds.

In the post, it said: “We need to have a little rant, which we don’t love doing but it’s unfortunately needed. We are very much a family-friendly venue, but the behaviour that was displayed yesterday crossed the line, and it certainly wasn’t the first time.

"To see children climbing our trees to dangerous heights, climbing and attacking the hand-carved statues with sticks, using our lawn as a football pitch, actively destroying parts of the garden and being allowed and encouraged to behave like this by their parents is totally disrespectful. The amount of litter and mess left on our lawn was appalling.

“We have to protect our beautiful site and we need to protect our team. The way members of our team were spoken to and dismissed when this behaviour was challenged is unacceptable. Whilst we welcome everyone's custom, our main focus is to maintain standards and ensure all of our guests enjoy The Priory for what it is.

"We will not accept this behaviour from the minority that has a detrimental impact on the rest of our guests. We would request those that are happy to allow their children to behave in such a manner that was displayed yesterday please find an alternative venue to visit that is more suitable for your needs.

"There are plenty of beautiful playgrounds and parks nearby. Our house rules: Dogs MUST be kept on a lead when in our grounds. Ball games are NOT permitted on our lawn. Breach of these rules will result in you being asked to leave. On that note, happy weekend.”

The post attracted hundreds of comments. One person wrote: "Good on you. Totally unacceptable." Another said: "Small minority, spoil it for all. I would have asked them to leave."

One woman wrote: “Never been to your venue, it certainly looks a lovely spot. You do what you need to to keep it that way, respect, common sense and manners are sadly declining... so more feral families out and about spoiling things!”

Another added: "Very well said you should be able to go here without annoying kids running crazy and their parents thinking it's OK. I wouldn't take my kids if they were unruly. "

A previous guest also commented: “Shocking behaviour in such wonderful grounds. I love The Priory.” While another added: “Totally agree, you have a beautiful hotel which is always kept so well.”
