An MP was left red-faced when he suffered an unexpected wardrobe mishap during a public speaking event as he prepared to address the crowd.

Javier Borrego, the MP for the left-wing Morena party in Mexico, was speaking at an event in Saltillo on 16 July to launch the party's National Project 2024-2030 ahead of next year’s general election, when his baggy trousers suddenly slipped south, leaving him red-faced and exposed.

He has now fought back against online bullies and vowed to advocate for disabled people, explaining that his trousers slipped due to a health condition.

A video recorded by an audience member captured the moment. The footage showed Javier holding the microphone and a page of notes in his hand, appearing confident as he was about to deliver his speech.

However, as he looked out into the audience and straightened his glasses, his trousers took an unfortunate plunge to his ankles, revealing his underwear to the crowd.

Amidst gasps and laughter from the audience, the mortified politician quickly bent down to pick up his fallen trousers.

Javier condemned the ridicule he has received and explained that it was because loosened his belt as part of the recovery process from spinal surgery, performed on June 7.

In a quote from Javier, translated from Spanish, he said: "I am a disabled person who had surgery. I do not think it is fair that a disabled person is bullied, that is disrespectful for any patient."

He added that his pants fell off because the belt loosened because he lost weight after the operation; and asked for respect, because it "could happen to anyone", he said.

He said that he will work on an initiative to penalize anyone who bullies people with disabilities. "We have to take out here, in the Chamber of Deputies, an initiative where whoever bullies disabled people is truly punished."

He added that several fellow senators gave him braces to prevent any future mishaps.

Despite the initial hiccup, Javier managed to regain composure and, with a hint of humor, apologised to the crowd, saying, "Oh, sorry."

He then continued with his speech, determined not to let the mishap overshadow the event.

Javier himself even managed to find humor in the situation, referencing a prediction from an episode of The Simpsons, saying, "There's an episode of The Simpsons that predicted this!"

Despite the momentary humiliation, Javier's ability to laugh off the situation and deliver his speech in the face of an awkward mishap won over much of the crowd.
