Fenway Sports Group, who own Liverpool football club, have purchased a golf team set to take part in the golf league being developed by two icons of the sport in Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.

FSG are run by John Henry and Tom Werner, with the former particularly familiar to the Anfield faithful. They are also now set to become the second team to join TGL, which is set to start at the beginning of January next year.

In an announcement made once confirmation of their participation was made official, Henry and Werner explained: "We are excited for this new journey.

"Through this new, tech-focused version of the game, New England sports fans will soon have a team of world-class PGA Tour players to cheer for and redefine for this community what it means to play the game in the modern era."

This is simply the latest addition to FSG's impressive sporting portfolio, which already includes the Reds, Major League Baseball’s Boston Red Sox and the National Hockey League’s Pittsburgh Penguins.

The first team to be announced by TGL has even bigger names backing it, including Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, Serena Williams and Venus Williams. That outfit will be based in Los Angeles.

TMRW Sports oversee the running of TGL and they too have issued an update following the inclusion of the FSG team.

"The team at FSG is uniquely positioned to help build an expanding community for fans of golf and embracing that audience is foundational to the Boston’s TGL team’s mission,” said Mike McCarley, who is the co-founder of TMRW Sports.

TGL's prime aim is to engage younger fans by using top of the range technology in primetime competitions that merge physical and virtual golf.

Six teams will make up the league, with each team boasting three PGA Tour players within their ranks. As things stand, the league has not yet issued any kind of update regarding a broadcast deal but it is believed they are in ongoing negotiations.

With the Woods and McIlroy both involved, TGL has not found attracting other big names particularly difficult.

All of Justin Thomas, John Rahm, Collin Morikawa, Adam Scott, Justin Rose and Rickie Fowler are set to take part.
