Star Trek fans have been left stunned by the shock news that animated series Prodigy has been ruthlessly cancelled by Paramount.
The TV series acts as something of a sequel to popular ‘90s show Star Trek Voyager and sees legacy character Kathryn Janeway help a band of young aliens escape persecution while exploring the galaxy.
The show focuses on an array of younger characters who stumble upon a Federation Starship that had been captained and seemingly abandoned by fellow legacy character Chakotay and the youths use it to escape a prison planet before exploring the stars.
A second season had been expected to air this year, but it is now unclear if the show will air at all after Paramount axed the series.
Deadline reported the news that the show had been cancelled by Paramount and will be removed from their streaming service alongside a raft of other shows including Grease: Rise of the Pink Ladies, Queen of the Universe and The Game.

They reported: “The new season will complete post-production, and the studio will be looking for a new home for Star Trek: Prodigy as season one comes off the service shortly.”
The news has not gone down well with Star Trek fans, however, who quickly got the show trending on Twitter with the hashtag #SaveStarTrekProdigy.
One fan of the show wrote online: “This sucks. With the possible exception of Strange New Worlds, Prodigy is the best ‘New Trek’ series.”
Another wrote: “Ridiculous. The writing character and the plotting and pacing of this show put many live action shows in the shade. I finished season 1 yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it.”
One tweeted: “This is such a disappointment. #startrekprodigy was such a great show to get kids excited about this wonderful franchise. I don't understand it was such a good show!”
And another warned: “This is so disappointing. I literally only subscribe to Paramount+ to watch new Star Trek. If they start pulling and canceling everything, it's a bye from me…”
Show screenwriter, Aaron J Waltke tried to reassure fans that there was hope of the series continuing as he highlighted reports that stated the second season is being completed and a new broadcaster is being sought.
He tweeted: “Obviously, there is not much I can say. Everyone on the cast and crew loves #StarTrekProdigy deeply. I have noticed some misleading headlines, so all I can do is point to this particular part of the press release. We are completing season two on schedule and seeking a new home!”
Fans of Star Trek Voyager were particularly invested in Prodigy as a sub-plot revealed the ship the young aliens discovered, the USS Protostar, had been captained by former Voyager commander Chakotay.

The storyline teased a romantic relationship between Janeway and Chakotay that had been hinted throughout Star Trek Voyager and the animated series appeared to line up a bigger adventure of Janeway taking the young aliens under her wing while trying to track down her former commander - who had been lost through space and time via a temporal anomaly - in future seasons.
