A Hull man has been heralded as a hero for diving into a lake to save a toddler who was struggling in the water.

Kev Wilson, 56, managed to pull the little boy from the water at Pickering Park, Hull - it is believed that the child fell into the water after following some geese, Hull Live reports.

Kev's wife, Carol, managed to reunite the boy with his mother and described her husband of 22 years as a "hero" for his swift actions.

Speaking to Hull Live, Carol Wilson said: "We were watching some geese walking their goslings across the grass to the lake and I had seen a small child following them. The geese went into the water and suddenly there was a commotion, as if something had spooked them.

"We turned to look and realised that the child was in the water. There were two elderly men on the bank near where he fell in, one was on his knees trying to reach his hand, but the boy was completely submerged."

She added: "Kev ran and jumped in and lifted the child out and passed him to the man on the bank. He was crying but seemed ok. The two men helped Kev out of the water and one of them rang an ambulance.

"I picked up the child, who was about 2, and looked around for his parents. A car then approached me and a woman who was obviously the child’s mother got out and took the child from me. She was very grateful and said she would get him checked over to make sure he was ok."

The incident occurred at around 1.30pm on Thursday (June 15).

Carol praised Kev for his quick thinking and immediate decision to go in after the child.

"I am extremely proud of him, but I’m sure if he hadn’t acted so quickly, one of the other men would have jumped in and saved him," she said.

"I would advise others in the same situation to approach with care as you don’t know how deep the water is and what is beneath the surface."
