A British man who travelled to Tobago to attend the funeral of his aunt and her husband after they died in an accident has drowned at a waterfall on the Caribbean island.

Justin Arthur, 24, travelled from London to attend the funeral of his aunt Teresa Adams and her husband Christian Adams who died in a motor vehicle accident on May 18.

According to reports, the couple was driving when their vehicle collided with a truck, which emptied its cargo onto the Adams' car.

They were taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead. Mr Adams was a fireman who worked with the Tobago fire division.

Tobago police said in a statement that Arthur, who came specifically for the funeral, got into some difficulty while swimming at a waterfall on the island sometime after 3pm on Tuesday.

His body was recovered soon afterward with the assistance of divers from the area along with the Tobago Emergency Management Agency responders.

A family member of Arthur said: "He came to bury his aunt and husband and now he will be getting interned himself. That is so sad as he had to travel all this way from England to attend and he had to die this way.

"We will miss him here in Tobago and so will the family in the UK. This is so sad."

His cousin Chavy M Arthur said: "One of my best cousins Justin Arthur and he was like my real blood brother. He use to live with us when he was 2 years old. I can't believe that You are gone. 'Justin, please wake up.'

"You came to Tobago for your Aunt Teresa Alleyne and her hubby Christian funeral. You were supposed to leave Tobago on Thursday to go back to England with your beautiful girlfriend and your Family.

"You came by me for your jacket last night. I'm so loss for words I feel very numb sight my heart hurts."

The body is expected to be flown back to the UK where he will be buried.

A spokesman from the Tobago police department said that they are investigating this tragic incident.

The spokesman said: "We are currently looking into it. We are collecting information and will keep all parties informed."
