To borrow a famous condemnation: The Home Secretary is not fit for purpose.

Suella Braverman isn’t up to the job personally, professionally or politically.

Her underhand attempt to dodge sitting with other drivers on a speed awareness course is surely the final straw.

Rishi Sunak, if he weren’t so weak and out of touch with the nation, would instantly sack a Cabinet minister accused of attempting to misuse her position to avoid accountability.

That he’s yet to order an investigation suggests the foot-dragging Prime Minister has an inkling the conclusion would be unfavourable both for Braverman and for him.

The Home Secretary’s team misleading the Mirror by wrongly denying their boss had received a speeding ticket, self-servingly painting her as the victim of misinformation, smacks of a troubling cover-up by a senior figure behaving as if she is a law unto herself.

The buck stops at the top. Sunak, by displaying little of the “integrity, professionalism and accountability” he declared would define his Premiership, is demonstrating why the Tory Party is also not fit for purpose.

It’s good to talk

Homes Under the Hammer’s Martin Roberts admitting an “irrational fear” of dropping dead after his brush with death last year will be a help for many.

It isn’t discussed enough the way emotional and mental scars can heal much slower than physical recovery.

The result is people often suffer in silence, thinking they are alone and the only one with that fear.

The TV star opening up honestly is doing everybody a favour.

Sofa soap stars

For a daytime TV news magazine show, the Phil and Holly sofa separation saga on This Morning is giving soaps and dramas a run for their money.

ITV bosses will be spoilt for choice when deciding which telly awards categories to enter the programme for.
