BBC newsreader Ben Thompson has thanked the make-up team at the corporation for managing to cover up his "messed up face" following a bicycle accident.

The experienced newsreader, 41, shared photos of his painful facial injuries on social media on Thursday after coming off his bicycle on the way home from work on Wednesday.

Ben suffered a a nasty graze on his left cheek and he added that "everything aches" as he posted the before and after photos of the make-up team's valiant efforts to make him presentable for our TV screens.

Writing to his 48,300 Twitter followers, he said: "Before/After: Big shout out to our amazing @BBCNews make-up team who had to transform my messed up face this morning after I came off the bike riding home yesterday (and yes, everything aches)."

He was then selected as part of the BBC Trainee Scheme, which opened up more avenues in different departments of the newsroom.

The newsreader first moved in front of the camera in 2008 when he became the Beeb's Middle East Business Correspondent. He has also had roles as Business Presenter and North America Business Correspondent

Ben now presents on Breakfast as well as co-hosting Business Live, the BBC's daily business programme broadcast around the world on the BBC News Channel and BBC World News.

He is not the only TV presenter to have a serious crash on their bicycle after Channel 5 news presenter Dan Walker was knocked out following an incident in February.

Walker was rushed to hospital after he came off his bike following a collision with a car in Sheffield, where he lives, on February 20.

He had been left unable to use his hand properly and could not remember details of the accident, though he insisted he is "not to blame".

Dan had been cycling from his home in Sheffield towards the train station when he was hit by a car on a busy roundabout.

He took to Instagram to update his fans of his condition, showing himself with cuts to his face and a bloodied nose.

In March, the former Football Focus host ensured he got back on the bike when he shared an image of himself riding in London on Twitter.

He wrote: "Got back on the bike for first time today and felt safe and secure. New bike, new helmet... just disappointed I didn't manage to match the socks to the frame."
