Four teenagers were killed, and several others have been injured in a multi-vehicle crash in Wheeling, Illinois, police have said.

The crash, which involved at least three cars, occurred at around 10.19pm on Tuesday, May 16 at the intersection of Dundee and Schoenbeck roads.

Seven people were hurt and taken to nearby hospitals but four teens, aged between 16 and 18, died from their injuries.

Police said the teens were in the primary car involved in the crash.

Their families are being supported by specialist social workers.

"Speed and a disregarded traffic signal seem to be the primary factors involved at this time," police said in a written release.

Pictures from the scene show emergency crews within the police cordon along with several badly damaged vehicles and car parts strewn across the road.

A bus stop shelter shattered due to flying debris.

The cars were severely damaged, with the front ends of at least three cars destroyed.

The road remains closed while police investigate what happened and they work to clear the road.

"It's pretty horrible, I was down the street, pretty close to here," a neighbour told CBS 2.

"The bang was loud and it hit the light pole and the power went out on this whole block."

Police are asking if anyone knows more information about the accident to call the Wheeling Police Department at 847-459–2632.

“There will be no further information released at this time out of respect for those involved and to allow the investigation to take its course." the Wheeling Police statement added.
