Mae Muller has declared she is ‘disappointed but proud’ after she bombed at the 2023 Eurovison Song Contest and landed in the second last slot.

The 25-year-old singer-songwriter gave her all on Saturday night when she belted out her tune I Wrote A Song.

But her energetic performance failed to capture the attention of the Eurozone and she tanked in the points department - scraping together just 24 points from the jury and public to land in second last place just ahead of Germany.

Taking to social media after the final votes were counted, Mae accepted that she had not got the result she had been hoping for - but was feeling good about her performance nonetheless.

“Ii know i joke a lot but we really put our all into the last few months, not the result we hoped for but so proud of everyone & what we achieved on this journey.”

“Congrats to all the countries, I’ll never forget this journey and I love you all.”

It was Loreen who won the contest on Saturday - taking the title back to Sweden for the second time herself and the seventh time for her country overall.

The 2024 contest will therefore be held in Sweden - and will also coincide with the fact that ABBA won 50 years previously back in 1974.

While Mae has broken her social media silence on her poor result, fans have been arguing over her performance via social media too.

Some slammed the star for singing off key, while others defended her and declared she gave a bold performance.

One unimpressed fan tweeted: “@maemuller_ well done for having a go but you were awful live through tv . Underwhelming and no one could understand what you sang. Think the votes showed your performance.”

And another blasted: “@maemuller_ again please. Auto tuned song sung live and surprise surprise it was flatter than a pancake.”

But others were defensive, with one writing: “Mae, if you are reading this please please do not feel upset or down in any way, you were sensational and should be extremely proud of yourself, you did us proud.”

Show winner Loreen, meanwhile, said after winning the competition: “It feels crazy. This is so surreal, man, I’m happy and I’m thankful, I’m thankful to all you guys out there that voted for me.

“The only thing I feel right now is so much love. Not in my wildest dreams did I think this was going to happen.”
